Jerusalem Season of Culture Events in July 2011

The Jerusalem Season of Culture, a series of riveting artistic experiences spanning the worlds of dance, music, poetry, philosophy, visual art, new media, and more, has been attracting visitors and culture vultures to the city since its opening in mid-May. Detailed below is the program for July:

30 June – 21 July: Different Trains at the Tower of David

A Grammy Award winning masterpiece by American composer Steve Reich, Different Trains will be performed by the Jewish Theater from Stockholm in the ancient Turkish prison known as the Kishle, at the Tower of David, amidst billowing glass shapes in play with light, video and shifting transparencies. The prison, which was specially renovated for the event and holds a maximum of 150 people, was built above newly discovered archaeological finds dating back to the Second Temple period that will be revealed to the public for the first time as part on this production.

4,11,18,25 July: Balabasta Festival at Machane Yehuda

The Machane Yehuda market is the stage for dancers, musicians, sculptors, actors and poets – all this among the colorful market stalls throughout the evening hours.

14 July: Contact Point

Dancers, actors, poets, philosophers, musicians, DJ's, MC's and more perform throughout the night at the renewed Israel Museum. Try imagining a standard visit to a museum. Now imagine something entirely different. That's Contact Point—a thoroughly original museum experience.

21 July. Road to Zion. A musical celebration of Jerusalem that brings international and local artists together to celebrate the diverse spiritual paths that lead to Jerusalem, finishing before dusk with a joint prayer session.

28 July. Renee Fleming, the world's leading soprano in a one-time performance with Maestro Zubin Mehta and the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, with the stunning backdrop of the Old City Walls at Sultan's Pool.
